Centurion does not have many institutions for the care of
the aged and therefore the Centurion Council for the Aged provides most of their services in three service centres or in the homes of the more than 3 500 elderly persons who require some form of care.
This approach ensures that the aged live relatively independently within the community for as long as possible.
Amongst the services provided within the community are geriatric clinics, home care, help with general hygiene, wound care, blood pressure and
blood glucose monitoring, post-operative care, meals and other support services.
A multi-disciplinary team, consisting of nursing professionals, social workers,
physiotherapists and occupational therapists, is used to provide these services effectively.
Elderly persons become members of one of the three service centres where they have access to a variety of services, including meals, chiropody and hair care, social functions as well as choir singing. The elderly are also taken on day excursions and tours, while some play cards and visit the library. Prayer meetings and Bible study is also offered, while the more agile take part in Fit Gym.
The council offers training for those who are interested in the care of the aged, care for the aged with Alzheimer's disease and for domestic workers caring for the aged.
The Council for the Aged leans heavily on the community for financial and other support.
